Whether you are buying a pressure washer for agricultural, industrial, automotive, or personal use, there are a variety of factors to assess in the buying process. It can seem overwhelming with all of the different models, parts, and accessories that are available for the modern day pressure washer. Luckily for businesses and consumers, Hotsy has a diverse catalog of pressure washers to fit the exact needs of every individual and business that uses our products. Here are some of the key items to look for when purchasing a new or used pressure washer.
Should My Pressure Washer Use Hot Or Cold Water?
Purchasing a cold water or hot water pressure washer generally comes down to the what type of surfaces you are planning to use your pressure washer on. Cold water pressure washers are great for knocking off items that are stuck to surfaces, such as dirt and grime. However, they are ineffective at removing things such as oil and grease stains from surfaces. Hot water pressure washers provide the power and heat combination to cut through the most difficult of surfaces. If you plan to use your pressure washer for for relatively light surfaces, get a cold washer pressure washer. If you foresee it used on heavy duty machinery and food processing equipment, you will want to get a hot washer pressure washer. Use our pressure washer selector tool to get started on finding out which style of pressure washer will work best for you!
PSI And GPM
It’s important that you are purchasing a pressure washer that has enough power to clean off your surfaces while avoiding damage or destruction. This is where the measurements of Pounds Per Square Inch (PSI) and Gallons Per A Minute (GPM) come into play. The PSI of a pressure washer determines the amount of force that is delivered by the water leaving the nozzle while the GPM determines how much water can be cycled through in a given minute.
Pressure washers PSIs can range anywhere from about 1,000-4,000+ PSI with water usage generally falling in between 1.5-4.0 GPM.. Due to the immense difference in power that this creates, it’s important to know which PSI is fit for the correct applications.
- 1,000-1,900 PSI @ 1.5-1.9 GPM: Great for cleaning gutters, car washing, patio furniture, and overall light usage. Most pressure washers in this this category are going to electric-driven, fairly portable, and great for residential jobs.
- 2,000-2,999 PSI @ 2.0-2.9 GPM: Pressure washers start becoming gas powered within this range of power. These types of pressure washers are great for cleaning off decks, sidewalks, house siding, and deep cleaning resilient objects. Be careful though, pressure washers with this much power can start tearing back layers of paint on items.
- 3,000-4,000+ PSI @ 3.0-4.0 GPM: These heavy duty pressure washers are meant to be used for the toughest of jobs. You probably will not be using a pressure washer with this much force unless you are involved with pavement cleaning, graffiti removal, industrial cleaning, construction jobs, or things similar to this.
Depending on what you are doing with your pressure washer, the mobility of it can play an important factor in whether or not it’s the right fit for you. Hotsy pressure washers are able to fit the needs of your mobility purposes. For example, our compact and maneuverable DB Series is great for jobs that require you to move about with the pressure washer. On the other hand, pressure washers like our 5600 Series are stationary but are equipped with 50’ hoses and great for industrial jobs.
